Purpose and History

The Georgia Chapter of HIMSS is pleased to sponsor a scholarship for a student of health information technology or informatics. The chapter established this scholarship to promote the development of emerging leaders in health information technology management. Georgia student members are all encouraged to apply for the scholarship. In addition to the scholarship award.

The call for scholarship applications opens Fall of each year. For more information, contact scholarships@himss.org.

The scholarship is for post-secondary students (from technical school to graduate school) currently enrolled a Health Information Technology program (or Health Informatics program, Healthcare Information and Management Systems, or closely related program) in an accredited school in the state of Georgia.

Through this scholarship and organization, I will have the opportunity to expand my network and knowledge of the Health Information Technology industry by attending the annual HIMSS conference. Additionally, this scholarship will relieve the significant financial burden I carry as a self-supporting student. I will now be able to focus directly on my schoolwork and put more energy into the actions I must take to reach my career goals. Alexa Morse:

I was awarded the David Cowan Scholarship in 2017 and it has made a profound impact on my career trajectory. While pursuing my Master’s in Public Health (MPH) at Emory University, I discovered my passion for the intersection of health, technology, and business; and subsequently, health-specific accelerator programs. I concluded my MPH having developed the business plan for a digital health accelerator for my final capstone project and a goal to build digital health-focused accelerator programs in Atlanta, which at the time, were largely absent in the ecosystem. Just as I was graduating with my MPH in 2017, I was offered a summer Fellowship at StartUp Health, a leading digital health accelerator based in New York. With the funds from the David Cowan Scholarship, I was able to accept the position and work with the StartUp Health team. This experience exposed me to strategic and operational aspects of a leading accelerator program and gave me a more in-depth understanding and foundation of this domain. This impactful experience eventually led to my current role at the Global Center for Medical Innovation, where I am the Accelerator Portfolio Manager, working with innovative health startup companies, focused on commercialization.

I am extremely grateful to have received the David Cowan Scholarship. Without it, I would not have been able to pursue the fellowship that launched my career and helped me obtain my current role. It has enabled my career to progress in a meaningful way, and I truly hope I have the opportunity to pay this forward for the Atlanta Health IT community in the future.

Beenish Lakhani:

I received the GA HIMSS David Cowan Scholarship in 2019. As one of the recipients of this scholarship, this award has been tremendously helpful to me academically and professionally. Currently, I am working toward my Bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics at Georgia State University. My passion for the intersection between healthcare and technology along with the evolving knowledge has introduced me to this career path. The David Cowan award aided me with defraying costs for my studies and commuting expenditures. From a professional stance, the scholarship award opened many networking channels for me with current professionals in this field. I had the opportunity to speak with many individuals in the industry at the GA HIMSS Annual Gala. Till this day, I have kept in contact with those professionals who I met at the first GA HIMSS event I attended in addition to seeing them at following GA HIMSS events. I am thankful to be a recipient for the GA HIMSS David Cowan Scholarship for supporting me financially and increasing my participation in the GA Chapter of HIMSS.

Scholarship Process: (For your reference & understanding)

Online applications are screened for completeness
1. All five essays completed
2. Letter of recommendation submitted online or via email
Complete application essays only are sent to evaluation and selection committee
1. No identifying information is sent, just the essays.
Essays are scored by each committee member
1. Maximum score of 100
Scores are averaged across all committee members
1. Those applications with >80 points move to the next round automatically
2. Those with 60-80 points are discussed, if necessary
3. Those with <60 points are rejected automatically
In the second round, members discuss the strength/weaknesses of the candidates and look at the letter of recommendation
1. If all winners are chosen, the process is done, if not, the group with scores from 60-80 are discussed.
Identifying information such as gender, race, age, school, and degree are not disclosed to the committee. Candidate names are not shared until the second round of the assessments.
